Lipoedema surgery is not body contouring with a different name. The goal is pain reduction and mobility, and the plan is built around protecting the lymphatic system while removing diseased fat.

Who is a candidate

A confirmed clinical diagnosis, persistent leg pain despite a documented period of conservative therapy, stable general health and a realistic understanding of what surgery does and does not fix. Weight should be reasonably stable before surgery, not because the fat responds to dieting, but because stability makes results predictable.

Staged, not maximal

Treating the whole lower body in a single sitting increases fluid shifts, bleeding and complication risk. We stage the work — commonly thighs first, then lower legs, then arms if affected — with several weeks between sessions. In the LIPLEG trial, 8% of operated patients had a serious adverse event; staging and volume discipline are how that risk is kept low.

Technique

Tumescent infiltration, fine cannulas, movement parallel to lymphatic pathways, and deliberate preservation of the superficial lymphatic layer. The aim is to decompress the tissue, not to strip it.

Recovery timeline

• Days 1–3: compression garments, walking from the first day, drainage of tumescent fluid.
• Weeks 1–2: manual lymphatic drainage begins; bruising and swelling peak then settle.
• Weeks 3–6: normal daily activity, continued compression, gradual return to exercise.
• Months 3–6: contour and pain improvement become clear; further stages are planned if needed.

Planning international treatment

Because treatment is staged, we plan each visit with its own follow-up window rather than compressing everything into one trip. Pre-operative assessment can be done remotely with photographs, measurements, your conservative therapy history and a pain score, followed by an in-person examination before surgery.

Honest expectations

Most women gain substantial and lasting pain relief and better leg shape. Surgery does not cure the underlying disorder, does not replace compression entirely, and does not prevent normal weight gain elsewhere. It removes the diseased fat that is causing the pain.

Travelling from the UK

Istanbul is a direct four-hour flight from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Dublin. A single stage usually means seven to ten nights in Istanbul: surgery, a review, drain and compression checks, then a fit-to-fly clearance. Follow-up continues by video once you are home, and your compression garments and lymphatic drainage schedule are arranged before you leave.

Travelling from the United States

US patients typically plan ten to fourteen nights per stage to allow for the longer flight home and to keep travel-related clot risk low. Consultations, photographs and staging are all completed by video before booking, so the trip itself is surgery and recovery only.

What does lipoedema surgery cost?

Cost is the first thing most women search for, and the honest answer is that lipoedema liposuction is not one operation with one price. A single-stage treatment of the thighs is a different plan — and a different theatre time — from a staged programme covering legs, hips and arms, so a figure quoted before anyone has examined you is a marketing number, not a quote.

What actually drives the price:

• How many areas and stages your case needs. Stage II and Stage III lipoedema is normally treated across two or three sessions for safety, and each session carries its own theatre and anaesthesia time.
• Volume of tissue removed. Large-volume lymph-sparing liposuction requires longer anaesthesia and an overnight hospital stay rather than day surgery.
• Technique. Lymph-sparing, water-assisted and power-assisted liposuction protect the lymphatics in a way that standard aggressive liposuction does not — this is what protects you from worsening lymphoedema later.
• Hospital setting. Operating in an internationally accredited hospital with intensive-care backup costs more than a day clinic, and it is the reason the safety record holds.
• Compression and aftercare. Medical-grade garments, lymphatic drainage sessions and recovery checks are included in an Istanbul package but billed separately in most UK and US clinics.

An all-inclusive Istanbul plan covers the surgeon, anaesthetist, hospital, garments, transfers, recovery checks and video follow-up after you fly home. Flights, extended hotel nights and travel insurance are not included. The quote you approve before travelling is the price you pay.

Lipoedema treatment in the UK — and why women look abroad

In the UK, lipoedema liposuction is not routinely funded. NHS access requires an Individual Funding Request, documented conservative therapy — compression, manual lymphatic drainage, exercise — over a sustained period, and evidence of exceptional clinical need; most requests are declined, and waiting times for the ones approved run into years. Private treatment in London is available but priced per session, with garments, drainage and follow-up usually charged on top.

That gap is why many UK and Irish patients look at staged treatment abroad. What matters is not the price difference but whether the surgeon uses a genuinely lymph-sparing technique, operates in an accredited hospital, and stages your treatment rather than removing too much in one session.
