Clung to life through 40 surgeries

Adem Kılıç (31), who suffered burns on 75% of his body in an accident in Istanbul, clung to life through 200 hours of surgery involving 40 operations. Kılıç took his first steps 192 days later.

After a luxury car accident in Istanbul that resulted in the death of a friend and left Adem Kılıç with severe injuries and 75% burns, Kılıç managed to stand up after 192 days of intense treatment. His treatment involved various techniques, from cell sprays to special devices.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Veli Karaaltın, a Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgeon from Acıbadem Atakent Hospital, noted that the success rate in such severe burn treatments is typically very low. He explained the treatment process: “A large team worked to keep Adem alive, addressing not only his burns but also his severe injuries. Normally, we use non-burned areas of the body to cover burns, but since nearly his entire body was burned, our margin for error was almost zero. We used all available technology and medical resources to close all open wounds on Adem’s body.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Karaaltın described the challenging treatment process, saying, “In addition to skin grafts, we used Cell Spray and Stem Cell treatments to close Adem’s wounds and burns. Furthermore, we treated a crucial perforation in the duodenum with a regional muscle graft, and we are now at the stage of physical therapy.”
