15-year-old Romanian citizen Andrea Timeea Mitrea got rid of lymphatic filariasis with a 15-hour surgery in Istanbul. Aesthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Mehmet Veli Karaaltın explained that they transplanted six lymph nodes taken from Andrea’s neck to both legs. He stated that this approach is a first in the world and that the Romanian patient’s case will enter the medical literature.

First High Heeled Shoes from the Doctor

According to DHA, 15-year-old Romanian Andrea Timeea Mitrea developed lymphoedema at the age of 14 due to a congenital circulatory disorder in both legs. As her condition progressed over time, Andrea’s feet became permanently swollen and she was unable to walk like her peers. The progression towards “filariasis” led her family to seek help from various medical specialists in their home country, as well as in Germany, France and even the United States.

Andrea Timeea Mitrea, 15, from Romania, needed a lymph node transplant from another part of her body to her legs. However, no surgeon was willing to undertake the procedure because both legs were affected. Her family reached the famous Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeon Prof. Dr. Mehmet Veli Karaaltın, known for his groundbreaking work on lymph node transplantation and successful separation of Siamese twins.

After discovering that Andrea could be treated in Turkey, her family travelled to Istanbul. In a groundbreaking 15-hour surgery last April, Prof Karaaltin performed a six-level lymph node transplant from Andrea’s neck to both legs. Having previously achieved a milestone with a three-level lymph node transplant, Prof Karaaltın said Andrea’s six-level procedure set a new record in the field, making her case the first of its kind globally and a significant contribution to medical literature.

Andrea, who came for her last check-up after the operation, expressed her happiness for being able to wear high-heeled shoes, which she had been dreaming of for a long time. Prof. Dr Karaaltın promised to buy her first pair of high-heeled shoes personally, adding an extra touch of celebration to this important event.
